Catching Squid on Squid Jigs

To catch squid using squid jigs, you can follow these steps:

Choosing the right squid jig is crucial for a successful fishing trip. Here are some key factors to consider:

Colour

  • Clear Water: In clear water conditions, darker colours like brown, green, or natural colours can be more effective
  • Dark colour squid jigs for clear water conditions

  • Dirty Water: In murky or dirty water, brighter colours like orange, pink, or chartreuse can attract squid more easily
  • Bright colour squid jigs for dirty or murky water conditions

  • Low Light or Night: Fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark jigs can be highly effective in low light or at night
  • Glow or neo colour squid jigs for night or low light level water conditions

Size

  • Smaller Squid: Use smaller jigs (2.5-3.0) in shallow water or when targeting smaller squid
  • Larger Squid: Use larger jigs (3.0-3.5) in deeper water or when targeting larger squid

Weight

  • Shallow Water: Lighter jigs sink slower, which can be beneficial in shallow water or when targeting slow-moving squid
  • Deeper Water: Heavier jigs sink faster, which is ideal for reaching deeper depths or fishing in strong currents

Shape

  • Slender Jigs: Slender jigs have a more natural appearance and can be effective in clear water
  • Chubby Jigs: Chubby jigs produce more erratic movements and can be more attractive to squid in murky water or low light conditions.

Use Jig Scent

Adding squid or prawn scent to your jig can make it more attractive to squid.

Choose the Right Time and Location

Squid are generally more active during dusk, dawn, or at night so using brighter colours and glow-in-the-dark jigs can be more effective. Look for areas where squid are known to gather, such as rocky shores, jetties, piers, or areas with submerged structures. Squid are attracted to light, so areas with good lighting, such as streetlights or pier lights, can be productive.

Use the Right Fishing Gear

You will need a light to medium-action spinning rod and reel combo, preferably with a high-quality braided line. Attach a squid jig to the end of the line. Squid jigs are specialized lures with multiple barbs or prongs that resemble small baitfish.

Cast and Retrieve Technique

Cast your squid jig out into the water and let it sink for a few seconds to reach the desired depth. Once it's at the desired depth, start retrieving the line by jerking or twitching the rod tip. This action makes the squid jig dart and mimic the movements of a baitfish. Pause and vary the speed of your retrieval to imitate the behavior of injured prey. Squid often strike when the jig is in motion or as it falls after a pause.

Pay Attention to Line Tension

As you retrieve your squid jig, pay attention to the tension in your line. Squid have a tendency to grab onto the jig and hold on. If you feel a sudden increase in tension or a pulsating sensation, it's likely that a squid has latched onto your jig. Maintain tension and continue reeling steadily to bring the squid closer to the surface.

Use a Landing Net

When the squid is close to the surface, use a net or a landing tool to scoop it up. Squid have a soft body and can slip off the hook easily, so it's important to be gentle when bringing them out of the water.

Handle with Care and Preserve

Be careful when handling the squid, as they have a beak and can give a mild bite. If you plan to keep the squid, place them in a cool, dry container or on ice to preserve their freshness.

Remember to check and follow local fishing regulations, size limits, and bag limits for squid in your area. Fishing for squid can be exciting and rewarding, and with practice, you'll improve your technique and increase your chances of success.
