Fishing with Stickbaits
Stickbaits are one of the most devastatingly effective and versatile fishing lures available and have been around for a long time in various forms. Stickbaits are used to target a wide range of target species from Bream and Tailor to Southern Bluefin Tuna. Fishing with and casting stickbaits can be one of the most exciting forms of fishing whether fishing off the shore, pier, or on reefs and is growing rapidly in popularity.
Stickbait Lure Types
In simple terms a stickbait is a hardbody lure that is long and slender and designed to imitate baitfish. Unlike other forms of lures, stickbaits have no bibs, blades or skirts to assist in creating a swim action while being retrieved. The swim action of the stickbait is determined by the retrieve method or style of the angler, which also makes them so much fun to use especially when they result in a strike. There are three basic forms of stickbait lures being, sinking, floating and suspending lures, all designed to attract a strike from the target species. There is a stickbait suitable for just about every fishing situation.
All good quality stickbaits will use wire-through construction as these lures can be abused by tough game fish. Stickbaits come in a range of shapes, sizes and weights all designed to target a range of fish species. Most quality manufacturers will have each lure design available in a range of baitfish colours and finishes.
Casting & retrieving Stickbaits
Although stickbaits can use a simply cast and retrieve action, most will benefit from some action from the angler to get the stickbait to be really effective and attract that strike. Most important is to impart an action on the lure that emulates a distressed or wounded baitfish. Its imperative to get the lure moving to action and draw the attention of the target species. If you are using a floating stickbait, a long and slow draw or stroke of the floating lure parallel to the surface works exceptionally well while a short sharp jerk, pause and retrieve of the lure does the job with sinking type stickbaits. This allows the stickbait to sink and roll during the pause, giving the lure the action of a “wounded baitfish”.
Lure Size – large or small
Stickbaits can include some of the largest of casting lures available and some of the larger stickbaits can produce surprising results such as Trevally who will often chase a large baitfish. Smaller stickbaits are often favoured when attempting to “match the hatch” and are great fun for light tackle or inshore anglers. However, stickbaits tend to be fairly heavy for their size, making it easier for the angler to get that long cast to the strike zone. They are can also be ballasted fore or aft, which enhances distance and long casts give stickbaits the advantage of covering a great deal of water with each retrieve.
Stickbaits are one of the most devastingly effective lure types to use and in most cases fishing with surface lures and stickbaits adds to the fun and “thrill of fishing” as you can often watch the fish strike your lure.

The Fish Inc range of lures includes the following:- The Fish Inc Fullback 190mm is a floating stick bait lure with a reinforced ABS body and comes fitted with heavy duty Owner Treble hooks. The Fullback is ideal for chasing larger fish feeding on or near the surface
- The Fish Inc Flanker baitfish lure is available in 2 sizes, the Flanker 85mm and Flanker 155mm. This stickbait is a high speed baitfish that is perfect for species such as bonito, tuna, mackerel, kingfish, tailor, queenfish, salmon trevally and more. It is equally at home being cast off a surf beach or rocks as it is in deep salt water.
- The Fish Inc Wing 120mm stickbait has gone through extensive testing with weight distribution to create a perfectly balanced lure which has resulted in the ultimate action that fish cannot refuse. The Wing is a sinking stickbait which is slim and fast with an erratic action. This lure can be used to fish different depths by adjusting the sinking time and is perfect for a variety of salt water game fish. Fish Inc Right Wing is fitted with Owner single hooks
- New to the range is the Fish Inc Wnglet, also known as the "Little Bullet". This lure is a smaller version of the Wing creating a small profile to match the hatch. It has the identical weight of the Wing at 42grams but instead of the ABS construction it has a solid Zinc body. It casts like a bullet and is perfect for getting that extra distance but also assisting with the sink rate, so can be used to fish a variety of depths depending on your sinking time. Awesome for a variety of predatory fish either shore based or in deeper waters. This lure comes fitted ready for action with #6 quaity Owner trebles. The Fish Inc Winglet 87mm match th hatch lure is available in 6 colours and is perfect for a variety of salt water fish whether from the beach, the rocks or boat
- The Fish Inc Scrum Half 140mm 60g Popper with a profile that is large enough to draw attention of big fish, while still being on the menu for medium species, being only 140mm. This lure is great for smaller game fish in estuaries, open water and sheltered bays. Its large concave mouth moves a lot of water but is still very easy to work because of its smaller size
- The Fish Inc Fly Half 80mm 16g Popper is built tough to punch above its weight and comes fitted with HD Owner trebles. Its unique belly design and balanced weight allows it to be retrieved easily and its internal weight also emits a low audible click when the lure is walked or popped, drawing fish to the lure
- The Fish Inc Prop 140 is a sinking stick bait lure that was built to be slightly larger and heavier than the Wing sinking stickbait lure. A blade on the lower belly ring has been added to give off some extra flash, which also gives the Prop an erratic fall on sinking. This results in a strike before you have even started your retrieve. The Fish Inc Prop 140 can be fished in a variety of ways whether it be a high speed surface retrieve or worked from the depths to the surface. This versatile lure will catch most saltwater game fish's attention. Also available in single hook version as the Fish Inc Tighthead Prop
- The Fish Inc Lock 160mm minnow is a long jerk bait lure that imitates long slender bait fish. The Lock 160 is a versatile bait that can be used to target a wide variety of game fish species. It can be used from both the shore and off a boat and works best with a "jerk, jerk, pause" retrieve. The Lock 160 also has a weight transfer system that allows it to be cast a long way with ease
- The Fish Inc Hooker 160mm Floating surface stickbait is a lure that has proved to have a phenomenal action and works great on a variety of species
- The Fish Inc Hooker 160mm Sinking stickbait lure was originally developed as a surface lure - the floating version. This sinking version has also proved to have phenomenal action and works great on a variety of species. If the surface action has died, why not pick up a sinking version and find the fish that are holding deeper
